Fertility and Acupuncture
Infertility is a growing problem in the US. High levels of stress, toxic environments, and starting families later in life all increase the odds of fertility issues.
Conventional fertility treatments are very, very expensive. Each in-vitro fertilization attempt can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Conventional in-vitro and IUI treatments are based on the idea that infertility is a quanity or quality of genetic material issue: the woman doesn't make enough eggs, or the man doesn't make enough sperm, or the quality of the eggs or sperm are low, so more should be created. No attention is focused on the overall health of the couple.
What if infertility is the body's way of saying that the couple isn't ready to have a child because they are not in a healthy place physically or emotionally? What if infertility is the body's way of signalling that until the quality of life and health improves, it is the body's judgement that the enviroment is not right to create and maintain a new life?
For example, few doctors tell patients that stress is the silent killer of conception. Chronic stress provokes hormonal imbalances, which can and do interfere with the delicate balance of hormones necessary for successful ovulation and conception. Stress is also a pregnancy killer: stress suppresses the production of progesterone, which is necessary for successful implantation and growth of the placenta. The hormonal imbalances created by stress also make the immune system hostile to the fetus. Stress reduction is a vital part of fertility treatment, and only acupuncture provides stress management for fertility.
Acupuncture for infertility is about improving the health and well being of the couple who want to get pregnant.
The body is wise: I believe that you do not have the "symptom" of infertility for no reason. It is your body's way of letting you know that right now, your health is not in a place to create, nourish and parent a baby. The key, then, is to bring the couple back to health so they can conceive. (Yes, the couple: 30% of all infertility is the result of issues with the man's fertility.) Hormonal imbalances, period problems, low sperm counts, infertility with no known cause: these conditions can all respond to treatment with acupuncture and Chinese herbs.
Acupuncture can also do things that Western medicine can't. Did you know that acupuncture is the only known modality that can actually change the body’s ability to produce and regulate hormones, in the woman or the man?
Furthermore, acupuncture and Chinese herbs have fewer side effects and/or complications than Western infertility treatments. It's a lot less expensive, painful and invasive, too.
Acupuncture alone can help increase your fertility. However, if you choose to undergo Western fertility treatments, acupuncture works in conjunction with your other treatment to significantly increase success rates.
Acupuncture and herbs do not work like conventional medicine: they do not “force” the body to do anything, nor do they override the body’s natural reactions. They work with the body, using the body’s own wisdom and healing power. As a result, it might take several treatments before you notice any difference. The benefit of this gentle, whole body approach is that you will feel better all over. Treatments will address your specific imbalances, and they will strengthen and nourish all of you. You will feel more energized, more settled, and more like yourself: and your health translates into increased fertility. That is the power of Chinese medicine: ALL of you feels better, not just the fertility issue!
If you go into conception healthier, it improves the likelihood of a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby, too.
I think of myself as a healthy fertility and pregnancy counselor. Acupuncture is really only one piece of the puzzle. I am here to guide you through the lifestyle changes (diet, exercise, sleep, sex, relaxation) and give you acupuncture treatments, and possibly herbs, that will make you healthy and increase your success of a successful conception AND pregnancy. The more you are willing to make changes to create a healthy environment within yourself, the more likely you will conceive and have a successful pregnancy.
I have some personal experience with fertility issues: I suffered from three miscarriages during the years I was trying to get pregnant. I understand the pain, loss, frustration and grief fertility issues can cause, and my experience helps me understand and help you go through this process.
